According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, 70% of the estimated 14.8 million Americans who use illegal drugs are employed. Drug testing is an important screening method for protecting your brand and employees. These 5 drug testing best practices will help you build and maintain a successful drug screening program for your organization.
"70% of the estimated 14.8 million Americans who use illegal drugs are employed."
1. Testing Method
Select a method of workplace drug testing that will cover the needs of your specific industry. For example, many healthcare organizations require an expanded drug testing panel if their employees are going to work with prescription medications.
Testing options include urine, hair, oral fluid (saliva). The gold standard for drug testing is the 5 panel urine drug test. However, if you have candidates in a safety-sensitive position, or who are working with access to specific medications, you may want to evaluate the testing panel, as well as the detection window of urine versus hair testing. Hair testing provides a longer detection window than urine testing and is used to show habitual drug use.
2. Testing Window
Maintain a reasonable window of time a donor can complete a drug screen. You want to make sure the donor does not have enough time for the drugs to leave the system.
3. Random Testing
Implement a random drug testing program to ensure a drug free workplace. Random drug testing is a best practice by the Department of Transportation and has shown to deter employees from abusing alcohol and drugs once they are hired by a company.
4. Electronic Scheduling
Utilize the benefits of electronic scheduling:
- Provides a view into what happens once an order is placed and the donor is notified to complete the test.
- Easier to locate test results and confirm if donor has in fact completed the drug test.
5. Drug Test Policy
Create a Company Drug Test Policy: Be consistent, very clear, and provide a detailed explanation of what the employees can expect. The United States Department of Labor’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy Builder is a good place to start.
